Course Objective:
This two-day course has been designed to introduce Surgical trainees to safe surgical practice within a controlled work shop environment and it aims to teach, assess and certify the ability of trainees to use safe and sound surgical techniques that are common to all forms of surgery.

The course consists of three main areas:
Open surgery
Trauma and Orthopedics
Minimal access surgery

DAY 1

Gowning and Gloving
Double gloving and gown/glove removal Handling Instruments
Scissors, haemostats, forceps and scalpel
Knots
One-handed reef knot and surgeon's knot

Knots (continued)
Instrument tie and tying at depth
Suturing Techniques
Needles and incisions
Interrupted sutures, simple and mattress sutures,
continuous sutures, sub-cuticular suture
Lunch
Skin Lesions and Local Anaesthetic Techniques
Techniques for tissue dissection
Application of local anaesthetic Excising a skin lesion and sebaceous cyst
Ligation/Transfixion
Pedicle transfixion, continuity tie, pedicle tie
Bowel: End-to-end interrupted (hand tied knots no assistance)
Refreshments
Debriding a traumatic Wound
Abscess drainage(no assistance)

Principles of camera technique, depth cueing, fulcrum effect
Box Trainers
Exercises: Placing peas in a pot, stacking sugar cubes, cutting a glove, putting Polos on a string and tying knots on a skin pad
